Sully's Steamers Statesboro, GA | Mural Illustration

Writer's picture: Raegan RowlandRaegan Rowland

Take a look at my first ever mural design! I can’t believe I got to see something I designed and illustrated, be SO big.

Statesboro inspired mural drawing

The reason I say this is a mural “design” and not a mural is because I did not paint this directly on the wall. I drew everything out on my iPad using Procreate, and then that design file was printed onto vinyl and adhered to the wall, much like wallpaper. While I do take much pride in this drawing, I just feel its important to point out that I did not have to put in any of the labor to actually get this up on the wall.

So how did I get this opportunity? Well, it goes all the way back to 2016. I was going to school at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA and had just started working for a sign company- Whitfield Signs. At the time, it was a small company with about 15-20 employees. I was working as a design intern. I learned everything I know about Design and working with clients there, from Jana who was the Head Designer, Sam who was head of the Production side of things, and Josh who was the owner. It was the best job I could have ever asked for while in college- great work experience paired with a team that felt more like family and gave me a home away from home.

Once I graduated, I moved away and ended up working for a larger sign company based in Atlanta, but I kept in touch with everyone over at Whitfield Signs. Fast forward to 2024, Jana reaches out to me and says “Wanna help me with a mural design???”

I don’t think I could’ve said “Yes!” Any faster. She gave me a run-down of what the client was wanting, and I started out with some sketches.

From there, we discussed what I had sketched out, met with the client a few times and I made a few more rounds of digital drawings. After a few rounds of drawings and revisions, we had the mural illustration finalized. The next step was to get it printed, and installed onto the wall. The team at Whitfield Signs did a fantastic job and this project would not have been possible without them!

Now, it is on display for everyone to see at Sully’s Steamers in Statesboro! Best bagels in town :)
